I always thought the law in the city was no livestock. Are chix livestock? Can't wait to hear the outcome!

lolobstersquad

that´s so cool. as long as it´s only for eggs; plucking chickens can´t be a lot of fun

When I was a kid, I had a pet duck that kept us well supplied with eggs. I'd love to raise chickens, but I don't have any outdoor space so I'll have to postpone that dream for a while--I'm not quite ready to turn part of my living room into a chicken coop! Go for it--it should be quite an adventure!

The idea of chickens is certainly tempting, as is a beehive, but I suspect it would really be a lot more work than benefit. And if you wanted to go out of town, you'd have to hire a chickensitter!

Thanks for the salad recipe. I'll have to try that dressing.

That's hilarious! I too think you should go for the chickens. My step-sister keeps them (on her property upstate) and says they're wonderful animals. Affectionate, stupid but really funny. The dog would love it!
That salad is so beautiful. I recently stumbled upon using both vinegar and lemon juice with olive oil to dress my salads. It's really yummy.

What a wonderful summer salad - very colorful. I would love to have chickens in my backyard but I live in a subdivision with a lot of rules. I would like to experience picking my own eggs - I think that would be fun! Love the pictures of your dogs!

As my father used to say: "Chickens, s**t, I love 'em." Also, please demonstrate for the nice people how you are going to ascend to the roof...

GREAT blog. I LOVE this salad recipe. Reading down the ingredient list...it just keeps getting better and better - then smoked trout - wheeeeeeee!
Dee-lectable!
City Chicken from Just Food was at Farm Aid's HOMEGROWN Festival this year in New York City - opened a lot of eyes!

You always have the perfect dish and photo. The colors are so vivid--and I would dearly love some of that right now. I would also love to have chickens--but they would become pets, I'm sure of that!

Casey

Ahaha. Years I ago I suggested keeping a few chickens in the back yard and after a LONG silence my husband said: "Once again I'm made aware of what a city girl you are. Trust me: you would HATE keeping chickens."

aria

what a beautiful salad! i can only imagine the how fresh and delicious each ingredient must taste. i would feel so rejuvinated after i just knwo it!

Julie, this salad is everything I would love for dinner tonight. I love salads but sometimes I don't know where to start to prepare a really good one.
The dressing appeals to me especially because of the tons of lemon. I love it. :)

Anne

Hi Julie! I finally have time to stop by. The salad looks delish. The idea of raising chickens is tempting, but my cats would go nuts!

Seeing that we live in snow country don't think those chickens would last long here:-)) Love your blog and your recipes...Di

Great salad recipe (and the rest of the blog, too). As you can see from our Urban Chickens blog, raising your own chooks is very easy, and the payoff in eggs and entertainment is well worth the five minutes a day and 20 minutes a week it takes to tend to the chickens. Follow your desires and get some of your own!

laura

Definitely legal to have chickens in the city, but no more than 4, and you have to have a ($80) permit.
See this link and scroll down a bit for the regulations for chickens:
